Sırma: This was my second Headliners Club session with Lisa and just like last time, it was a very productive and inspiring experience working with her. To me, Lisa is a very refreshing electronic composer, continuously flourishing…. She’s not afraid to try new techniques, she embraces technology, and she’s so open to taking direction while maintaining her musical identity at the same time. But she is new to composing with her voice, and it was really exciting to explore this new territory with her on this track. We kept her vocals in focus, from spoken-word sections to harmony and double layers and pad vocals. She went from “I don’t really sing” to making a track that revolves around her vocals. Isn’t that amazing?! She’s amazing.
That’s right — we sent an even Better Now, out-of-this-WRLD probe past all the FEFE’s and ZEZE’s that were Meant to Be in the Top 5 of 2018’s Billboard Hot 100 charts, and what we got back was a tally of data and stats Grande enough to satiate all you Nonstop audiophiles’ consonance curiosity. Nice for What? Nice for showing any Childish Young Bunny how to craft a song XXXTensive enough to bang its way into a Top 40 slot, next year and beyond.

Evan Zwisler is a NYC-based musician who is most notably known for his work with The Values as a songwriter and guitarist. He is an active member of the Brooklyn music scene, throwing fundraisers and organizing compilations for Planned Parenthood and the Anti-Violence Project. He started playing music in the underground punk scene of Shanghai with various local bands when he was in high school before going to California for college and finally moving to New York in 2012.

The MIDI version is richly informative. There are long passages where there’s almost no rhythmic correspondence between the notes as written (and as “performed” in the MIDI) and the way that humans perform them. People are playing the same notes in the same order, but have pretty much thrown Bach’s written rhythms out the window. But the MIDI isn’t a very satisfying listening experience.
The color scheme on the aQWERTYon pitch wheel is intended to give you some visual cues about how each scale sounds. Green notes are “bright” (i.e., major, natural, sharp, or augmented). Blue notes are “dark” (i.e., minor, flat, or diminished). Purple notes are neither bright nor dark (i.e. perfect fourths, fifths and octaves). Grey notes are outside the selected scale. Finally, orange notes are the ones that you are currently playing.
